It is great to know about a man with varied interests. Harley Reagan was a man of many interests. He was a soldier, warrior and veteran to most but there was more of his life than which met the eye.
Harley ‘Gunnie’ Regan was a Naqual, Some, Husband, son, brother, father and friend to many. But born and raised in Texas, SwiftDeer; he often referred to himself as a half breed cowboy and while his family and friends can attest to this, there’s still more to this great man. He was also skilled in martial arts and anyone with a dojo in SwiftDeer could confirm this as a fact. Along with martial arts, he also delighted in the competitiveness of the shooting world. He himself founded the Deer Tribe Gun Club which has been running monthly Steel Challenge matches for more than 13 years now. But his accomplishments weren’t just limited to the physical sphere but were carried over to the spiritual. He brought an attention to detail, intensity of focus and a knowledge of what was really important in situations and techniques.
Harley Reagan was the innovative man who was the founder of the The Deer Tribe Metis Medicine Society (in 1986) for the purpose of translating, gathering and teaching the wheels and keys of the Sweet Medicine SunDance (SMSD) path of turtle island. The Deer Tribe also gave guidance, training and vision to apprentices and students who were working towards achieving personal growth and spiritual awakening through this gateway. The programs included rites of passage, healing ceremonies, longhouse programs and teachings, physical mastery, community ceremonies and gatherings as well as sacred sexuality workshops. There were also publications which ranged from basic shamanic teachings from the Sweet Medicine SunDance Path to the Thirty Sacred Laws of meditation techniques to get information about the Rites of Passage. But the most invaluable part of the offering was not a product or publication and neither did it have a price- it was the gateway process of the Sweet Medicine SunDance Path.
But this man passed away on September 10, 2013 in Arizona, United States and left behind a legacy of people whose lives he had touched and contributed to. This great man was commemorated on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 with over 160 family and friends, who were gathered to celebrate the life of Harley in Phoenix. Stories were shared amidst tears and laughter which marked the life of a courageous and brilliant man. The memorial also included the US Marine Corps honor guard presentation of Military Funeral Honors with gun salute, bugler playing Taps, and American flag folding and presentation to his wife, Dianne.
He touched the lives of many around the world with his teachings he brought through the Twisted Hairs Council of Elders: the wheels, keys, and ceremonies of the Sweet Medicine SunDance Path. He will be missed beyond words can possibly convey but his memory and deeds will live on.
